SmugMug > keywords > arizona > Still another of the remains of the 45 dwelling pueblo close to Montezuma's Castle in the Verde Valley of Arizona. Note the brickwork at the opening, and the smoke black on the ceiling. The Sinagua Indians just walked away about 1400AD
SmugMug > keywords > arizona > This is one opening of another, fairly deteriorated apartment type building a short distance West of Montezume Castle, also a dwelling for the Sinagua Indians. This is known as Castle A, and was originally a building of about 45 rooms. This dwelling is interesting to see since you can still see the brickwork around some of the openings, and others without brickwork, you can still see the stains from the fire smoke on the ceilings.

SmugMug > keywords > arizona > This is called Montezuma's Castle, an indian ruins of the Sinagua Indians from approx. 1100AD. These were amazing people who created this 5 story 20 room dwelling out of rock and were excellent hunters, and farmers. If you look to the lower right of the ruins, you will see several holes in the limestone that were either other homes or storage rooms. Interestingly enough, Montezuma never came this far north, but the early settlers assumed that this was an Aztec dwelling thus the name Montezuma. The Sinagua Indians, like the Anasazi, just seemed to walk away from their home by the early 1400's and became absorbed into other tribes.
